Chouyaku Hyakunin Isshu: Uta Koi – Episode 1

Chouyaku Hyakunin Isshu: Uta Koi is a collection of tales told by Fujiwara no Teika in this episode the two stories are about Takaiko and Narihira and then Yukihira and Hiroko.

The Honorable Ariwara no Narihira

The Honorable Ariwara no Narihira is about a guy named Narihira who falls in love with a woman named Takaiko who is to marry the emperor but after he sends her romantic poems of how much in love he is with her she pretty much sends him a challenge that he can’t sneak inside the castle to see her.

After he was able to sneak inside he meets her several times and she falls in love with him. After he stops seeing her and she marries the emperor and by fate they meet again, she doesn’t really recognize his voice but after she requests a poem from him she makes the connection that the poem is about her in her crimson robe that she wore when they first and last met.

Story wise The Honorable Ariwara no Narihira was pretty good they really should have made it the whole episode about this story because right when I was getting into it ended. Characters in the first half of this series are sort of hard to rate as at first Takiko is cold towards Narihira and his sexual advances towards him, then after she falls in love with him shes pretty much a different person but still cold towards him saying she is just toying around with him until she gets married.

Story: B-
Characters: C

Councilor Yukihira

This story is about Narihira’s older brother who has been promoted to as the Head Governor of Inaba and his wife and his upcoming trip to Inaba.

This episode really doesn’t have anything to talk about as it is just a cut and dry episode, the first episode as I said should have been an hour because this one was more of a filler if you ask me just to fill the remaining time.

Story: F

The OP for Utakoi is perfect, the music reminds me of something that the visual kei rock band D would play and the female singer has a great voice. The ED is by far the worst song I have ever heard in my life, and that says a lot because I listen to all types of music but this song was just too painful to even finish, thank God for mute buttons!

The anime style really annoys me, the edges of on everything is very inked and it reminds me of old Edo period Japanese artwork, I don’t mind it in art but in anime it just makes everything seem like everything is just 2 dimensional.

Overall this series really isn’t that great so I don’t know if I’ll keep watching as its really going to be a collection of stories so there really won’t be a great character or a great story to keep driving this story to keep me watching.
